I'm designing a logo for a construction company and need tips?

What I'm looking for are just basic guidelines for making a logo for this company (Good things to include or things to stay away from trying). The logo will be used on forms and business cards for now so it won't be too intricate, just something that catches the eye and makes it unique. I don't need specific ideas for the logo itself just information about good design practice really.
